Answering an open-ended survey, “I love Makati Science because … ; I hate Makati Science because …,” 55.17 percent of the respondents said that they love the Makati Science because of the good qualities of its students, majority of which are bright, responsible, fast learners, and fun to be with.
Alarmingly, only 17.24 percent of the respondents love the high quality of education that the Makati Science offers even if it ranked first in the National Capital Region in the 2007, the 2006, and the 2005 National Achievement Tests (NAT) given by the Department of Education through the National Education Testing and Research Center.
Good camaraderie among the faculty and staff came in second, despite the unprofessionalism among them with 24.14 percent. With 41.38 percent, respondents said that the faculty and staff share a special bond of friendship.
Opportunities for professional growth and development, such as trainings and seminars inside and outside of the school, also ranked second with 41.38 percent, while teaching and learning environment ranked third with 37.93 percent, for the school is still treated as teachers’ second home.
Like their students, the prestige brought about by the school is also a reason why the Makati Science is loved, having 24.14 percent. Sharing the fifth spot with 17.24 percent are good facilities, clean restrooms, and quality of education.
Because the school lacks television sets, air-conditioning units, light crystal display projectors, and science laboratory equipment, among others, the Makati Science is hated for its limited facilities with 10.34 percent.
Ending the two-digit percentage of why teachers love the Makati Science is the teacher-student ratio of the school with 13.79 percent. Supportive city government earned 6.9 percent, while the joys of teaching and teaching being their bread and butter garnered 3.45 percent.
On the other hand, pressure from people in authority and inconsistencies in some school rules and regulations went hand-in-hand in second place for the reasons why teachers hate the Makati Science at 20.69 percent.
Trailing behind is the attitude problems among students with 13.79 percent. Teachers explained that in spite of being intelligent, some students are lazy, noisy, arrogant, undisciplined, and sometimes, they resort to cheating during examinations to obtain high ratings.
Administrative issues, grade conscious parents, and more work less pay stratagem followed with 10.34 percent and both 6.9 percent respectively. Also at 6.9 percent are high expectations and ironically, less privilege and administrative support.
NAT results, school management, sudden change of school curriculum, incomplete attendance of students during class hours all gained 3.7 percent.
