Eight secondary schools in the National Capital Region competed during the semifinals, but only the Makati Science and La Immaculada Concepcion School in the City of Manila moved forward to the final round.
“Actually, there was a problem with one of the questions given. It was a mathematical problem and our answer was -15. Most of our competitors answered 105. The judges’ answer was -9, but we reasoned out that the answer is -15. Eventually, by the third round, they said that our answer was correct, but the question was no longer considered,” Jezel Christine Nolasco Quevada, one of the alternates, said.
Trained by Mrs Ma Xyrza Tolosa-Asido, Makati Science Economics and French language teacher, the team consisted of Kevin Ross Diaz Nera, Von Ervy Bacay Atienza, Rhomuell Castillo Bernardo, Joel Edward Berces Cardinal, Zatia Denise Danao Gammad, and Marian Denise Glipo Basallote, while Quevada, Julia Nina Somera Moncada, Mariel Dela Torre Delos Santos, and Ancilla Marie Baulita Inocencio were alternates.
“Though a problem arose, we were really happy that we were still able to move on to the final round and became victorious,” Basallote said. “We felt nervous but we stayed optimistic that we would win the contest.”
Defending the championship trophy by four points, the Makati Science team members received 100 percent scholarship in any four-year course of their choice from the host school and an Acer Aspire 4730204330 Series laptop computer for their trainer.
“We are proud of ourselves and our trainer, Mrs Asido, because she played a big role in our sweet victory,” Gammad said.
